Italian tomato exports to Germany have halved since 2010

Germany

A note from Road to Quality (Assoementi) analyzed some data published in Germany and revealed that Italy has lost competitiveness also when it comes to vegetable exports. "Tomatoes are still the favorite and the per-capita consumption in Germany is of around 27.2 kg a year. Domestic production is increasing due to the livelier demand for local products, and prices have increased by 13% compared to 2019."

The Germans seem to be more interested in their local productions rather than in the tomatoes from Italy and France. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the annual tomato production went from the approx. 73,000 tons of 2010 to the approx. 107,000 of 2020. Nonetheless, most of the produce is imported - at least 80% comes from the Netherlands and Spain, while imports from Italy and France have more than halved.

In 2010, Italy exported to Germany 39 thousand tons of tomatoes against the 18 thousand of 2019. Click here for the original German source.
