According to data from the Customs and Excise Department, between January and August 2020, Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables increased by 8% over the same period of the previous year, totaling 2,078 million euro. In this period, fruit imports amounted to 1,495 million euro, i.e. 15% more than in the same period of the previous year. The most imported products were the avocado with 216 million euros (+ 12%), kiwi, with 163.5 million euros (+ 24%), and blueberry with 132 million euro (+ 48%). The fruit's import volume increased by 8%, totaling 1.2 million tons.
Meanwhile, vegetable imports decreased by 5%, reaching 583 million euro, due to the 15% decrease in potato imports, which totaled 174 million euro and accounted for 30% of the total. The second most imported vegetable has been the tomato with 101 million euros (+ 6%). Spain imported 967,132 tons of vegetables in the aforementioned period, i.e. the same volume as in the previous period.
66% of the fresh fruits and vegetables that Spain imported -i.e. 1.3 million tons- come from third countries. Morocco was the country's leading supplier with 583 million euro, accounting for 28% of the total value of Spanish imports. Morocco also grew strongly, with an 18% from January to August 2019, maintaining the upward trend of recent years, according to data from the Customs and Special Taxes Department, processed by FEPEX.
