According to Peruvian ginger or kion, the return of a star, a study prepared by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), national ginger production has experienced significant growth in recent years. In 2014, Peru produced 10,800 tons. In 2015 production increased by 108% and totaled 22,400 tons. Then, in 2016 it grew by 86%, amounting to 41,100 tons, a record figure that was accompanied by an expansion in the area devoted to this crop, which totaled 2,209 hectares. In the following years, there was a drop in area. In 2017 the area decreased to 1,800 hectares and in 2018 to 852 hectares. In those years, ginger production decreased to 32,500 tons and 15,400 tons, respectively. In 2019, there was an 8% increase in the production area and a 13% increase in ginger production. That year, the country produced 17,400 tons of ginger in 920 hectares. Between January and September 2020, producers harvested 14,600 tons of ginger from 777 hectares. In the same period of 2019, they harvested 7,400 tons, which suggests that production in 2020 will exceed 20,000 tons.
Demand increased in 2020
This year, the pandemic has favored an increase in global demand for ginger, as people consider it can help to strengthen the immune system. Ginger exports between January and August of 2020 amounted to 24,200 tons, i.e. 110% more than the 11,500 tons exported in the same period of the previous year; a volume that was even higher than the volume exported in all of 2019. In terms of value, this important export growth represents 97% compared to the same period in 2019, when exports totaled 22.2 million dollars. As of December, exports are expected to surpass the figures for 2017, when the county achieved the highest values on record. The main destination markets were the United States, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Chile.
