The data that Hortoinfo has produced from the Estacom statistical service shows the fall in exports of Spanish tomatoes to important European markets, such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Last year, Spain exported a total of 728.81 million kilos of tomatoes worth 934.84 million euro, which is 19.97% less volume and 3.32% less value than in 2016. The fall in German imports stands out. Germany has been reducing its tomato purchases from Spain almost constantly. In 2020 it imported 184.32 million kilos of tomatoes from Spain, i.e. 23.36% less than the 240.51 million kilos it imported in 2016. The value has also decreased, however slightly, totaling 284.23 million euro in 2020, a figure similar to that of 2017.
France continues to be the second-largest buyer of Spanish tomatoes, with a volume of 111.9 million kilos, i.e. 13.79% less than the 129.8 million kilos it imported in 2016. The value in 2020 was 116.26 million euro, while the value in 2016 was 120.82 million euro. The United Kingdom was the third destination for Spanish tomatoes and registered a 28.98% decrease in purchases in the last five years. Last year it bought a total of 97.98 million kilos, a quantity lower than the 137.97 million kilos of tomatoes it imported from Spain in 2016. The country paid Spain 120.72 million euro for the tomatoes it imported, i.e. 16.83 million euros less than in 2019.
The Netherlands ranked fourth purchasing 70.71 million kilos of tomatoes in 2020, i.e. 37.58% less than the 113.13 million kilos it purchased in 2016. Dutch imports of Spanish tomatoes in 2020 amounted to 85.54 million euro, 27.63 million euro less than in 2016. Poland ranked fifth and maintained its purchase levels. In 2020 it purchased a total of 62.71 million kilos of Spanish tomatoes for 66.11 million euro.
