Exports of New Zealand tomatoes suspended

New Zealand

The New Zealand health authorities have suspended the exports of tomatoes and tomato seeds to other countries. New Zealand has detected in its soil the presence of the pepino mosaic virus, also called PepMV, which affects tomatoes.

“For now, the New Zealand authorities are investigating the extent of the spread and no date has been communicated as to the scheduled resumption of the certification,” according to Sivap (Veterinary, Food and Plant Health Inspection Service), in a statement on June 25th. The virus, first detected in an Auckland greenhouse, can also affect potatoes and eggplants. The health services and professionals of the tomato sector expressed their concern.
