Japan Al imports slump 26% in Jul vs prior month but recover from year earlier

Japan

Japanese aluminium imports fell by 25.5% in July from the prior month, according to data released by the Japan Aluminium Association. Japan imported 200,700 tonnes of aluminium in July, a decline of 68,000 tonnes from a month earlier. But July’s volume marks an increase of 33.9% (or 50,800 tonnes) from the same month of 2020, the data shows. Imports include unwrought and wrought aluminium and aluminium waste and scrap.

According to the United States International Trade Commission, unwrought aluminium products include units in the form of “ingots, blocks, billets and slabs and are not machined or processed otherwise by basic trimming, scalping or descaling.”
Unwrought material typically makes up the bulk of Japan’s aluminium imports and includes alloyed and non-alloyed material.
In July, imports of unwrought aluminium totaled, 174,100 tonnes, making up 86.7% of total imports.
